Alongside colouring agents for polymers, additives have an important role: they improve certain properties of polymers and enable easier handling of plastic products. Similar to colouring agents, there are various different options for additives to polymers. In many fields, preference is given to additive masterbatches – beside the use of treated raw materials.
UV- and Thermo-Stabilizer-Masterbatches
UV- and long term stabilizers protect films, moulded parts and the contents of secondary packaging (e. g. cosmetics) against all kinds of aging processes.
Antistatic equipment of films and injection moulded parts, also in combination with mould release agents, as well as in combination with White-, Grey- and Black-Masterbatches.
The application of nucleating agents can reduce the cycle-time and thus save costs. Because of the higher crystallinity and re-crystallization temperature properties like transparency, mechanics and shrinkage can be improved.
Blowing Agent-Masterbatches to avoid shrinkages and hollow spots and for the production of structural foamed material of all thermoplastic resins in injection moulding processes as well as for extrusion of foamed profiles, films and ribbons.
Antislip- and Antiblock-MB
Antislip-Masterbatches to obtain antislip surface films for heavy duty bags and wall insulating. Antiblock-Masterbatches for non-sticking, hardly “blocking” film surfaces and to avoid plate-out. Special types for thin films and coatings available.
Slip- and Mould Release Agent-MB
Internal slip Masterbatches to improve the melt flow for better mould release. External slip Masterbatches to reduce the surface slip and to optimize the mould release. Antisquealing effect.
The application of Masterbatches with functional filler materials, processing aids, acid-acceptors, drying agents etc. optimizes the processing, facilitates the mould release and reduces the cooling time.
Flame Retardant Additives – halogen based FRs
Halogen based compounds represent the most important group of flame retardants (FRs). In case of fire these organic chlorine or bromine compounds release halogen radicals, which interfere highly efficient in the burning mechanism by disrupting the radical chain reaction as energetic, aggressive species are neutralized.
Flame Retardant Additives – phosphorus based FRs
Phosphorus based flame retardants are usually applied in highly oxygen containing compounds. There they mainly influence the reactions in the condensed phase. By the formation of polyphosphoric acid and char on the polymer surface the output of combustible products is reduced and a protective layer is generated.
In nearly all thermoplastic polymers degradation reactions of the polymer chain are induced by heat, UV-radiation and further deteriorating factors. In the worst case this may lead to a change of the mechanical properties as well as yellowing, delustering and many other effects on the handling properties. The primary antioxidants counteract these effects by neutralising the free radicals immediately after the damage of the polymer chain. However the secondary antioxidants react at a later point in time with the formed hydroperoxides.
